The Vertex system is used for stabilization of the occipitocervical junction. The most common causes of craniocervical instability are such inflammatory arthritides as rheumatoid arthritis, and trauma resulting in the disruption of the stabilizing ligamentous structures of the craniocervical junction. Tumors and infections may also cause instability of the occipitocervical junction.
